White Picket Fences

By Kyle Ann Robertson

#1 in the Behind Closed Words collection

White Picket Fences is a heartfelt family drama fueled by an honest story of motherhood, written for those of us caught up in our own self-searching journeys. The one thing Julie Cahill knows because of her transitory upbringing as a military brat is that she never had a hometown. So she has made sure her kids would grow up in one forever home, in a forever neighborhood, with lots of forever friends. Yet her dream of a permanent hometown has her feeling fenced in. Set in the Delaware Bay area, Julie has achieved her dreams but struggles with having to accept invisibility, underappreciation, and being taken for granted by her family in trade for her unconditional love. Her guilt over not being available for her family on that one fateful day has her challenging karma by tightening her grip on her daughters and husband, ultimately pushing them away.

Reader Reviews

  • Just finished this book by Kyle Ann Robertson and…wow! It truly resonates with you as a wife and mother, sometimes feeling overworked, overlooked and taken for granted. Definitely a tear jerker at times because of the loss of her 12 year old son, especially as a boy mom…it hit me right in my mama heart! A lot of women will relate to this book, especially if you are or have raised teenagers! A must read.

  • Kyle Ann Robertson does a splendid job of conveying how many mothers feel as they go through marriage and motherhood. She addresses thoughts we all probably have had but too afraid to say it. Our mother's heart wants the very best for our children and family and yet somewhere along the way we get lost and often get misunderstood. This is a beautiful story about a mother finding herself again.

  • I finished this book in a day! I could not put it down as I was tangled more and more in Julie’s web. This tale will resonate with mothers worldwide. Julie’s emotional journey is one that I can relate to, and I know others will as well. I laughed with her and cried for her as if I were living her life too. As we get deeper into her story, the complexity of her character is beautifully displayed as she tries her best to find her place within the family. The vivid details and supporting characters bring the story to life. I imagined Julie’s world and could picture each scene as the words flew off of the pages. I am humbled and warmed by this beautiful story that I am thankful to have read!
